When children start to learn the sounds associated with letters, start with the ones that mean something to them – like those in their name, or /m/ in “mum”.  It is also easier for them to learn sounds we can hold on to like /m/, /s/, /f/, than short, popping sounds like /p/ and /k/.

Help them to learn these sounds by seeing, writing, saying, and feeling what their mouth is doing.  Using lots of different senses can help them learn these letter-sounds more quickly.
