Robust literacy is a skill we all need.  And it is one thing we also have plenty of evidence-based certainty about how to teach. The skills of literacy can be taught to children and all learners – regardless of how complex their challenges might be.

Our fabulous Linda McKillop will be continuing to offer Yoshimoto Orton-Gillingham training to educators and parents in Tasmania. This is direct, data-driven teaching to you. It covers the key knowledge and techniques for all educators to unlock students’ literacy.

This course is built from clinical evidence and practical application of the science of reading instruction. You will learn the multisensory, phonological, Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling in whole classroom, small group and one-to-one settings. You will learn the skills necessary to fully implement this data-driven model for teaching reading to all students – and not only that, you will be effective teaching students with dyslexia.

You will:

  • Gain an understanding of the essential components of reading success.
  • Identify reading challenges for students and know how to plan a course of action
  • Understand the learning needs of students with dyslexia and other reading challenges.
  • Be taught a scope and sequence for teaching phonetic elements of reading and spelling.
  • Learn how to develop and implement a structured and multisensory lesson plan.
  • Acquire knowledge of structured multisensory procedures for teaching reading and spelling skills: sounds, syllabification, blending, learned words, fingerspelling, dictation, word fluency, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension.
  • Learn correction procedures and a diagnostic/prescriptive approach to teaching reading and spelling.
