Early Language
& Communication
Babies seek connection. Through connection language grows. Babies are hardwired for this to happen. When all goes well, language learning seems effortless and amazing.

Language:
The Key to Connection
& Lifelong Learning
It feels exciting and joyous for a parent as their child’s new language supports deeper connection and strengthening of relationships. This is a fundamental need for all humans – to be in relationship with other people! In this way, language becomes the foundation for social and emotional development, and the gateway to learning right throughout childhood and into adult life.
Our speech pathologists empower parents through play-based, evidence-driven methods like DIR/Floortime and Hanen, helping them become “expert players” in their child’s language journey. With the right support, parents can foster communication skills that will benefit their child throughout life. Language isn’t just about words—it’s the foundation for meaningful relationships.
Signs of Language and Communication Problems
Language and communication are so important. It can be worrying and upsetting for parents and carers when children’s language does not seem to grow easily in the way you expect.
Signs of possible language problems:
- Limited vocabulary (fewer than 100 words by age 2)
- Not yet combining words by age 2 (e.g. “more juice”, “Hi Daddy”)
- Doesn’t follow instructions easily
Whilst all children develop differently, there are developmental milestones to help parents and caregivers identify typical speech and language skills at various ages. These milestones provide a framework for understanding when children should start cooing, babbling, saying their first words, and forming simple sentences. Recognising these milestones can help caregivers ensure their children receive the support they need.

Parents are the Most Important Teachers!
We understand the importance of a warm, loving relationship in the development of good language and communication skills. Parents are centrally involved in therapy to grow their child’s language and communication skills. We also know that play is a fantastic tool for children to learn and develop their language and communication.
It is through playful interactions with caring adults that children can be best supported to develop shared meaning about the world around them. Our speech pathologists use a variety of evidence-based approaches, underpinned by the principles of child-centredness and relationship development. This supports parents to become “experts” in playing and stimulating language growth with their child.
If you notice that your child is having difficulty with learning words, making sentences, expressing clear meaning or understanding other people, then please contact us to discuss your concerns.
