Work with Us: Speech Therapy Assistants (STA)
At Speech Pathology Tasmania, we actively employ speech pathology students as Speech Therapy Assistants (STA) to provide them with valuable hands-on experience. This approach allows us to contribute to clinical development and ensures quality practice with our clients. However, STAs can also have a background as a teacher assistant or equivalent experience in Allied Health or Disability Services.
How Does the Role Work?
Typical sessions are alternated between a therapist and an STA, where a client sees the therapist for one session and the STA for the following three to four sessions. In some cases, therapy assistants may conduct sessions less frequently, depending on the client’s needs. Sometimes a Speech Therapy Assistant will work alongside a Speech Pathologist in running small group programs in the clinic or at a school or other venues.
The Speech Pathologist sets the goals and gives clear instructions and support to the STA to follow those plans, focusing on the same targets.
Sessions last 45 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for preparation and record keeping. STAs may conduct sessions at schools, preschools, or homes, and travel time is compensated.
Benefits for Speech Therapy Assistants
- One-on-one supervision with a qualified Speech Pathologist monthly.
- Attend professional development sessions with a senior therapist once a term.
- A personal laptop with access to therapy resources.

Work with Us: Graduate Program
Building Confidence and Competence
The SPT Graduate Program is a full-time role designed to help new Speech Pathologists transition smoothly into their professional careers.
With regular clinical supervision and mentoring from senior Speech Pathologists, graduates are guided through staged caseload increases to prevent overwhelm while building confidence and expertise.
The graduate will attend monthly In-Service meetings that promote professional growth. Additionally, graduates will have access a comprehensive selection of assessment tools, therapy resources, and administrative support.
The program includes external professional development opportunities, such as certifications in DIR/Floortime, the Orton-Gillingham Language Approach, and Circle of Security Parenting™ program.
This well-rounded support network helps new graduates build strong foundations in clinical practice, client management, and ongoing professional development.
