Empowering Literacy for All

Orton-Gillingham
Language Approach

The Orton-Gillingham Language Approach is a proven, structured method designed to transform how students learn to read, write, and communicate.

What is Orton-Gillingham Language Approach?

Orton-Gillingham (OG) Language Approach is a structured literacy method based on the foundational work of Dr Samuel Orton (neuropsychiatrist) and Anna Gillingham (educator & psychologist). Expanded internationally for whole-class use by Ronald Yoshimoto, it is further enriched by Linda McKillop, a Speech Pathologist with extensive clinical experience.

How It Helps Students

OG Language Approach teaches how words and language work for speaking, reading, and writing. It utilises phonology, syllabification, orthography, morphology, semantics, syntax, and etymology to build fluency and comprehension.

Meeting Diverse Needs

This approach supports all learners, including those with dyslexia. Its explicit, systematic, and multisensory methods empower educators to transform struggling students into confident readers and communicators.

Orton-Gillingham Language Approach is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association.

A Flexible, Science-Backed Approach to Literacy

OG Language Approach is flexible, grounded in the science of reading and applied linguistics, and was founded from two key sources:

A Wealth of Proven Expertise

Validated by over 90 years of time-tested knowledge and practice, the OG Language Approach has a strong foundation of success in literacy education.

Scientific evidence addressing:

  • How individuals learn to read and write
  • Why many people encounter difficulties
  • How dyslexia makes achieving literacy skills more difficult
  • The most effective instructional practices for teaching reading and writing

OG Language Approach can either stand-alone or add value to any existing structured literacy strategy, helping you to understand and adapt it for students who need some extra support.
