Voice &
Chronic Cough
Most people use their voice every day and never really think about it very much. It is only when it starts to let us down by not working the way we expect that we realise how reliant we are on our voices for everyday communication.
Voice issues can affect everyday communication and lead to frustration. If you notice persistent voice changes, such as hoarseness, loss of volume, or chronic coughing, it’s important to seek help early.

Signs & Symptoms
of a voice problem
- Changes to sound of voice, e.g. croaky, raspy, hoarse, rough, breathy
- Changes to function of voice, e.g. loss of volume/power, vocal fatigue, running out of breath, loss of pitch range
- Pain associated with speaking
- Persistent coughing or throat-clearing, in the absence of a cold or infection
- Complete loss of voice, in the absence of a cold or infection.
If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms for more than 3 weeks, in the absence of other symptoms, you should talk to your GP about a referral to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. They will help to diagnose the problem and may recommend speech therapy.
