So, what is an OG Educator, what do they do, and how can working with an OG Educator help you or your child?
The Orton-Gillingham Language Approach is a structured, evidence-based approach to teaching reading, spelling and writing. Grounded in the Science of Reading, it teaches the patterns of written language in a clear, systematic sequence.
Our written language system is a code for our speech sounds and spoken language. It is a complex code with predictable patterns that can be learned.
Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham Approach by mapping these language patterns and creating a systematic method for teaching the relationship between speech sounds and their written symbols. You can read more about them and the Orton-Gillingham Approach here.
What is an Orton-Gillingham (OG) Educator?
An Orton-Gillingham Educator works alongside a Speech Language Pathologist to support people who experience difficulties with reading, spelling and writing. While a Speech Language Pathologist can help with both spoken and written language, an Orton-Gillingham Educator focuses specifically on literacy development.
Orton-Gillingham Educators are specially trained in structured, multisensory literacy instruction that is recognised as an effective intervention for dyslexia and other literacy learning difficulties.
Using the Orton-Gillingham Language Approach, educators teach the language code in a systematic way, helping learners recognise patterns in written language while developing reading comprehension, spelling and written expression.
Some people naturally recognise language patterns and learn to read easily. However, around 40% of learners benefit from explicit, structured literacy instruction. Working with an Orton-Gillingham Educator provides the tools and strategies needed to understand these patterns and become a confident reader and writer.
