The Orton Gillingham Language Approach has become known as an ideal approach to use with students who have dyslexia. But did you know that the OG Approach can be used to teach:
- adults with reading, writing and spelling difficulties
- anyone who is learning the English language
- in a one-on-one, small group, or whole group setting
- the foundational literacy skills that would benefit ALL students in grades K-3?
The Orton Gillingham Language Approach is primarily used for students who have Dyslexia. These individuals have difficulty primarily in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling. Often these difficulties create a learning gap in other academic areas as well.
While people who do not have Dyslexia can acquire language skills easily, people with Dyslexia need to be taught the various components that make up the English language.
Not Just for School Students
This same approach can be used to teach those components to anyone who is learning the English language. OG techniques can work for students learning to read who are not native English speakers.
The Orton Gillingham Language Approach is an evidence-based approach that has been used for many decades to successfully provide literacy remediation to students of all ages.
In recent years, the Orton Gillingham Language Approach has also been adopted in general education classrooms and has been very effective with the general education population.
Targeting Individual Learning Needs
Due to the prescriptive nature of the Orton Gillingham Language Approach, the lesson plans target the student’s individual learning needs.
As you can imagine, any group of students will have varying needs and learning styles. The OG Language Approach accommodates each student’s needs and learning styles by incorporating multisensory strategies.
By addressing a learner’s individual needs the OG Approach helps to set up the student for success and ignite in them a renewed zest for learning.
Proven and Effective
The Orton Gillingham Language Approach has been proven effective time and time again in assisting individuals to overcome their language-based disability.
